Levels of Greek Proficiency
The levels of the Certificate of Greek Proficiency fully correspond to the levels described by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, so the levels are as follows:
- A1 - Elementary Knowledge
- A2 - Basic Knowledge
- B1 - Moderate Knowledge
- B2 - Good Knowledge
- C1 - Very Good Knowledge
- C2 - Excellent Knowledge
Teaching Objectives By Level
C1 - Very Good Knowledge
The C1 level candidate is characterized as a competent user of the Greek language.
He can use the language relatively spontaneously and communicates comfortably either in the countries where Greek is spoken (Greece - Cyprus) or in various communities abroad where there is Hellenism abroad. Texts of this level, oral or written, are demanding and difficult enough, but the user can cope based on the vocabulary and grammar he knows.
In the comprehension of spoken speech are given excerpts of speech in which the speaker uses the language in its natural, daily flow, without pauses or gaps, and often there are several interlocutors who express their views. At this point, elements of irony or speech patterns used in the Greek language must be understood.
In comprehension of written language the candidate has the ability to read and understand almost all categories of texts and can answer accurately about the views expressed within them. The texts can be "read" along with the deeper meanings that often exist behind the lines of the texts.
In the production of written speech the candidate can write texts which have a logical continuity and have clarity and accuracy. It can move to different text types and adapt their content accordingly. His writing must be characterized by correctness, accuracy and correct argumentation. In the production of oral speech, the user can take part in discussions in various ways, either by quoting his point of view, or by supplementing his interlocutor where he deems necessary, just as would happen in a normal discussion. Use vocabulary suitable for any occasion.
Certification of Proficiency in Greek
In the USA, the Greek language certificate at KEG is directly related to the Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is a type of award given by an Education District, a State, and sometimes a school to U.S. public high school students who have achieved a high level of proficiency in one or more languages, in addition to English, upon graduation. It is usually printed in the form of a stamp on the diploma and as a special note on the detailed grade form, which indicates that the student has acquired communication skills in a foreign language.
For admission to public Colleges and Universities but also for the employer looking for staff, the Seal of Biliteracy is a proof of the candidate's language skills and gives him a significant advantage in the academic and professional field, compared to his fellow candidates. Please note that in the USA, because of course each State has its own Board Of Education, the advantages of the Stamp may differ from one State to another.
Greek Proficiency Certification has been included in the Seal of Biliteracy program in the following States
- In the State of Illinois
- In the State of Maryland
- In the State of California
- In the District of Columbia
- In the State of Ohio
- In the State of N. Jersey
- In the State of Delaware
- In the State of Georgia
- In the State of Indiana
- In the State of Virginia
- In the State of North Carolina
